"Exchange semesters were fun they said, never did they tell me that it would be so hard coming back. ODTU, the university that has my heart. The best decision I have ever taken was to apply for this exchange, as it shaped my life in the best ways. From always wanting to be independent to achieving it was a journey worthwhile. Locating myself in a university as big as a city – doing my own chores, finding time to study, hanging out with people with different nationalities was something I never thought I would find the most happiness in. When studies would get tough, getting lost in the university’s forests, and finding myself in-front of a lake was breathtaking, while also having the option of taking just a single bus ride to the best beaches, snowy mountains, or the mighty Galata Bridge. Despite having being gone to Turkey before, experiencing it as a student spanned over a couple of months is just a different story. Living there as a student, and also managing myself as a tourist was a challenging but thrilling task. From skiing in -22 degrees on one weekend to studying for my computer engineering exam on the other, my life was a compilation of spontaneous plans. Aside from the adventures, my academic takeaways were also immense; sitting in the Business department listening to Tugral Atasoy’s witty stories to hearing Eminegul Karababa’s years of experience condensed into a 2-hour lecture, there was a lot to learn, especially in my ‘Introduction to Database Management Systems’ class which pushed me way beyond my comfort zone- having to design a Graphical User Interface and learning two programming languages in less than a month certainly wasn’t easy. My greatest achievement, however, I believe is how I managed to learn the art of communicating in an entirely new language, after picking bits here and there from taxi drivers, waiters and classmates. I never knew I would get so comfortable to call ODTU my home. Every night I look forward to going back there, sitting at the same café’s socializing with the same people over silly things, repeating the best time of my life.

None of this could have been possible without the LUMS OIA, comprising of @Gulmeena and @Zainab who made it possible for me to encapsulate this everlasting experience into my life and for that, I will always be thankful."

Over the last few months, I have learned how to live independently, intuitively think of solutions to conflicts and to put my best foot forward in situations where my preconceived notions about the world were challenged. This was my first time traveling abroad and it has truly opened me up to the joys of navigating a foreign city on my own. I will surely miss Istanbul but the stories it has left in its wake are unforgettable. I am incredibly grateful to my professors at Koc University, the Office of International Affairs at LUMS and the friends I made along the way for keeping me grounded."

"I don’t have enough words to explain the invaluable contribution of semester exchange towards my self-development, both in my personal and professional life. I can safely say that it’s has been one of the most incredible and unforgettable experiences in my life! Over the course of the last five months, I had the privilege to befriend students from more than twenty different nationalities across five different continents and share our culture, food, music, and lifestyle. Moreover, I had the amazing opportunity to interact and study with an incredibly diverse student body which provided me with a unique international perspective and exchange of ideas. This ideal environment not only helped me grow as a person but also took me one step closer to making my dreams a reality and played a pivotal role in making new friends and experiences in life worth cherishing.   These experiences inculcated in me respect for diversity and independence within individuals. Being the Ambassador of Pakistan and LUMS, I left no stone unturned to make sure that I engage in a constructive dialogue to represent the true picture of Pakistan and eliminate all the negative connotations associated with Pakistan in the western world. Being a travel enthusiast, this exchange provided me with the perfect opportunity to explore Europe. Since I had the Schengen visa, entire Europe was open for me. I traveled and explored fourteen European countries and along the way met people from different walks of life. Frankly speaking, I would not trade this opportunity for anything in the world."

This program gave me the opportunity to not only engage with world class teaching facilities, but also to make life long connections with professors, mentors and fellow students from every corner of the globe. Turkey is a culturally rich country with a beautiful and diverse landscape and very kind people. And I’m glad that I could get a taste of it through the places I travelled, people I met and experiences I gathered.

I am extremely thankful to the International offices of both LUMS and Koc for their support and guidance every step of the way, and for making this experience so wholesome for me. To everyone reading this, I would highly recommend making use of these opportunities while you can. Believe me, they’re life changing! "

Maria Farooq (Class of 2012) and adjunct faculty at SAHSOL, was recently promoted to Partner at Axis Law Chambers!

Maria joined Axis Law in 2016, where she has built a reputation as a seasoned international commercial arbitration lawyer. Some recent highlights of her career include representing a Pakistani state-owned enterprise in an LCIA arbitration arising from a power purchase agreement, as well representing the same enterprise in an ICC arbitration arising out of a construction dispute. Though Maria has pivoted to Axis Law’s disputes practice, she remains well-regarded for her extensive transactional experience, attested to by her recommendation in the Legal 500 Asia Pacific for her “experience in handling M&A” and for her deep “knowledge of telecom laws”. The challenge of starting over from scratch at Waseda University in Tokyo was probably the most rewarding aspect of my undergraduate studies! From forming relationships with new people, trying many different cuisines, adapting to the cultural sensitivities of a new country, having dinner discussions with my professors and peers about global politics over Burmese food (in Tokyo!) and finding loopholes to travel a province in under 40$ (Hiroshima’s 6 cities, true story) – my exchange semester was the most formative experience of my undergraduate studies.

I still remember Bito-san, who moved to Hiroshima two years after the atomic bomb dropped and witnessed the city’s restoration process. He gave me a 3 hour personalized tour of the city, when I went to to the Atomic Bomb Memorial Museum. It was so poignant to see him describe how vividly a post nuclear fallout city rebuilt itself from the ashes. Such are the truly excusive and priceless moments you get, when you dare to start anew. Exposure wise aside, there were practical benefits too: I managed to land a job which requires a Master’s degree - straight out of college, due to my international exposure. So go ahead, apply, and roll the dice – the experience will push you towards self discovery.
