By studying abroad, you will get to experience a new place which has magnificent new outlooks, cultures, customs and activities. Moreover, when you are overseas, -the benefits include the opportunity to see new terrains, natural wonders, museums and landmarks of your host nation.
Outgoing Exchange
To the students at LUMS, Office of International Affairs (OIA) wants you to search areas of study and choose from a diversified list of partner institutes to realize your true potential while exploring the world.
Why Study Abroad
By studying overseas for a semester, you will have an opportunity to study in a foreign country and take in the culture of a new place. Whether you are an international student wanting to visit Pakistan, or a Pakistani student at LUMS considering synthesizing study with travel, an amazing life-changing experience awaits you.
Experiencing and getting to know various styles of education systems across the globe is another reason why students should take a semester abroad. By choosing to study a semester abroad, you will have a chance to see a side of your major that you may not have been exposed to earlier.
A new country gives you a chance to hone your language skills and immerse yourself in a new culture. This includes learning some of their key phrases, trying out their national dishes, experimenting with clothing styles that in turn will help you have a better understanding and appreciation of that host country’s people and culture.
On your return from the exchange semester, you will have gained a new approach to culture, language skills, a great education, and a willingness to learn, all of which are very appealing to future employers and will make your resume stand out!
You get to have credits transferred to your degree (if you follow a few crucial steps directed to you by the OIA and your school’s department/program coordinators), all while getting to study abroad at a world-class university while polishing your skills.

Being an exchange student provided me with a unique perspective, as I had the chance to immerse myself in Turkish culture alongside my exchange friends who shared my excitement for exploration. With my fellow exchange friends by my side, we embarked on road trips through which we not only explored the beauty of Turkey but also formed bonds that transcended borders and cultures.
One of the highlights of my experience was taking a Turkish language course. Attempting to speak Turkish with locals was both challenging and rewarding. Some laughed, while others appreciated my effort to learn their language, which truly enriched my cultural experience.
I'm immensely grateful to my home university for granting me this life-changing opportunity.

It taught me not only about academia but also about the beauty of diversity, the value of friendship, and the significance of embracing new experiences. I am immensely grateful for the memories I've made, the knowledge I've gained, and the friendships I've forged.
Living in Turkey allowed me to unravel the layers of a culture so rich and diverse that every interaction felt surreal. From savoring the flavors of local cuisine to getting lost in the stories of ancient ruins, I found myself intertwined with the tapestry of Turkish life.
If you're considering an exchange semester, I wholeheartedly recommend METU as your destination of choice. It's a place where education extends beyond the classroom, where cultures converge, and where personal growth knows no bounds" - Spring 2023

Furthermore, I had the chance to travel the beautiful country of Brazil, immerse myself in its rich culture, and befriend some incredibly smart and talented fellow exchange students, all of whom came from different parts of the globe. I visited famous cities like Rio de Janeiro, went to music festivals and beach concerts, explored historical towns in Minas Gerais, and had so many more memorable moments with these amazing people! All this allowed me to practically develop my interpersonal communication and personal management skills in a unique and rewarding manner.
I am deeply thankful to the International Relations Office at UFMG (DRI) and the Office of International Affairs at LUMS (OIA) for their endless help and guidance throughout these past six months. I highly recommend students to try out an exchange semester — solo traveling and living abroad in your early 20s can truly be enlightening, and the exchange program that LUMS offers is the perfect way to experience that! - Spring 2023

I took a variety of courses, including Money and Banking, Crime and Criminology, and Development Economics. Moreover, I had the opportunity to explore a new language, French, to a B1 level of proficiency. Navigating a different academic system challenged me to adapt, innovate and collaborate across borders.
Beyond the classroom, I had the chance to travel cross country, explore the culture, food, and cities Malaysia had to offer and befriend friends from all over the globe during classes and travel. The friendships I forged with fellow international students during our many adventures will undoubtedly last a lifetime. All these experiences broadened my global perspective and deepened my appreciation for cultural richness.

Malaysia was truly a melting pot of cultures, and I was given a chance to explore not only the beauty of a country so rich in tourism but also to talk to and befriend people from all around the world! Although education was an important aspect of my exchange semester, the best part was the experience of being exposed to such a diverse range of people and cultures. Being able to represent Pakistan amidst this diversity was also an honour.
For anyone looking to apply for an exchange program, think of this as your sign! It will be the experience of a lifetime, and the things you learn will prove to be absolutely invaluable. Things like worries about language barriers, food and friends are all valid, but they are all easily overcome once you actually take the leap.

French classes and business modeling courses might sound intimidating, but trust me, they were eye-opening experiences that added so much value.
Let's talk travel – my Malaysian escapades included the stunning Perhentian Islands, unforgettable snorkelling with sharks and turtles, and much more. It felt like living inside a dream.
What did I learn? Patience, for sure. And guess what? I even embraced Muay Thai, facing my fears and coming out stronger.
So, if you're dreaming big, let me tell you, an exchange in Malaysia is a one-way ticket to turning those dreams into reality. I'm here to say – go for it! Your life will thank you later" - Spring 2023

The converse was also true, I was the first Pakistani for most of the people I interacted with. Despite that, we got the opportunity to get to fully know each other. I learnt about the foods, music, cultures of many different places. I used to invite people for dinner and introduce them to Pakistani food. We collectively used to go to German classes for beginners and used to practice it. Also, during Christmas season, we used to visit the beautiful Christmas markets across the city before collecting together to watch the FIFA world cup. Overall, the entire five months were very eventful. Every week was filled with hiking trips, international dinners, social events (basically, parties), and travelling to places within Europe. Towards the end, we became almost inseparable. Now, I have friends from all corners of the world with whom I share these wonderful memories. I am very grateful for OIA and FHJ on giving me this opportunity and would highly recommend this program to anyone who loves meeting new people, trying out new things, and travelling to new places.”

I am so glad I applied, because I discovered a version of myself that I didn't know existed. I landed in Istanbul worried about how I will make friends and connections to last me four months, but I came to discover that there were over a hundred exchange students from all over the world visiting Koc for an exchange. The joys of a walkable city, impeccable public transport, and endless places to explore were just the tip of the iceberg of an unforgettable exchange.
My Turkish roommates were the best roommates I've ever had (I've been a hostelite for three years), and I still regularly text and video call with the friends I made, despite the varying timezones (UK, Netherlands, Canada and Egypt to name a few). The courses there were also intellectually stimulating, with top-of-the-line professors, some of whom I made great connections with and am still in touch with after returning. I hope this experience is as fulfilling for others as it has been for me, and I wouldn't change a thing about it."

I gained a new perspective on the world and made lifelong connections with people from different backgrounds. Studying Global Business in a multicultural class, I was able to work with people from more countries than I could have imagined.
Living in an apartment with flatmates from Sweden, Spain, Azerbaijan, and Romania, I learned so much about different cultures (and foods!). I made friends who quickly became like family. We explored the city together, tasted traditional Austrian dishes, cooked our home dishes for each other, and even traveled to neighboring countries during our weekends. Our conversations were a mix of English and (attempted bits of) German, and we all created lifelong bonds.
Graz itself is one of the most beautiful cities I have visited. Living here allowed me to gain a deeper appreciation for art and culture, and I loved taking walks between the old and modern parts of the city. I was most fascinated by the city's rich history, including the many museums and galleries showcasing Austrian art and artifacts. I was especially fortunate to be here during the Christmas season and witness the most mesmerizing Christmas lights and markets set up all over town!
I highly recommend studying abroad to anyone who wants to expand their cultural understanding and create unforgettable memories. I am extremely grateful to OIA at LUMS for providing me with this opportunity and guiding me through it."

ODTU, the university that has my heart. The best decision I have ever taken was to apply for this exchange, as it shaped my life in the best ways. From always wanting to be independent to achieving it was a journey worthwhile. Locating myself in a university as big as a city – doing my own chores, finding time to study, hanging out with people with different nationalities was something I never thought I would find the most happiness in. When studies would get tough, getting lost in the university’s forests, and finding myself in-front of a lake was breathtaking, while also having the option of taking just a single bus ride to the best beaches, snowy mountains, or the mighty Galata Bridge. Despite having being gone to Turkey before, experiencing it as a student spanned over a couple of months is just a different story. Living there as a student, and also managing myself as a tourist was a challenging but thrilling task. From skiing in -22 degrees on one weekend to studying for my computer engineering exam on the other, my life was a compilation of spontaneous plans. Aside from the adventures, my academic takeaways were also immense; sitting in the Business department listening to Tugral Atasoy’s witty stories to hearing Eminegul Karababa’s years of experience condensed into a 2-hour lecture, there was a lot to learn, especially in my ‘Introduction to Database Management Systems’ class which pushed me way beyond my comfort zone- having to design a Graphical User Interface and learning two programming languages in less than a month certainly wasn’t easy. My greatest achievement, however, I believe is how I managed to learn the art of communicating in an entirely new language, after picking bits here and there from taxi drivers, waiters and classmates. I never knew I would get so comfortable to call ODTU my home. Every night I look forward to going back there, sitting at the same café’s socializing with the same people over silly things, repeating the best time of my life.
None of this could have been possible without the LUMS OIA, comprising of @Gulmeena and @Zainab who made it possible for me to encapsulate this everlasting experience into my life and for that, I will always be thankful."
