Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (The Federal University of Minas Gerais – UFMG) was founded in 1927, and stands as one of the oldest and most prestigious and vibrant public universities in Brazil. It is widely recognized as an outstanding centre of academic excellence, scientific and innovation accomplishments, not to mention its teaching quality. The University runs two large public hospitals and one veterinary hospital, an emergency care unit (UPA), 25 libraries, five museums, one astronomical observatory, two ecological conservation areas, four experimental farms, and one advanced centre for high-performance athletics equipped with Olympic class pool and track-and-field infrastructure, seizing a total area of 876 ha and a built-in area encompassing 639 thousand square meters. UFMG currently offers 91 undergraduate courses with over 32,000 students, and 208 graduate programs (63 at the Ph.D. level) amounting to more than 14,000 students currently enrolled in all fields of knowledge.

Location

Why choose this university for an exchange semester?

UFMG remains the best evaluated federal university in Brazil, according to the General Course Index (IGC) 2021, released by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira. The University maintains a maximum IGC, 5 (bands vary from 1 to 5) since 2007, when the index was created, but, in recent years, it has been growing in the continuous index. In the 2021 edition, UFMG reached the continuous value of 4,368 in the survey, the highest among all federal institutions in the country.

Out of town students regularly enrolled in courses at UFMG can apply for housing at the University. UFMG currently offers 1,014 rooms with both single and multiple occupancy rooms in Belo Horizonte and 108 in Montes Claros, which include accommodation for persons with special needs.
