Irshad Hussain is a founding faculty member of the SBA School of Science & Engineering (SBASSE) at LUMS and has played a leading role in establishing and developing its Chemistry program, now the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering. He holds an MSc in Chemistry from Quaid-i-Azam University and a PhD in Nanomaterials Chemistry from University of Liverpool.
Prior to joining LUMS, he led nanobiotechnology research at National Institute for Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering, where he established a research group that has grown into one of Pakistan’s leading nanobiotechnology programs. He has published over 150 research articles in high-impact journals, including Nature Materials, Science Advances, Nature Communications, Chemical Society Reviews, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Advanced Materials, and Journal of the American Chemical Society. His research focuses on the synthesis and applications of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles for biomedical, energy, environmental, and catalytic applications.
Dr. Hussain has secured over USD 2 million in competitive national and international research funding as Principal Investigator, including projects supported by HEC-Planning Commission, HEC–US National Academy of Sciences, DAAD (Germany), EPSRC (UK), PSF, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has established strong international collaborations and has held visiting and honorary positions at leading institutions, including University of Massachusetts Amherst, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), University of Cambridge (Charles Wallace Fellow), King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and several prominent university in China including Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST, Wuhan), Jilin University (Changchun) and Shandong Academy of Sciences.
He has provided sustained national leadership in science policy, chairing Pakistan’s key national nanotechnology expert panels and currently leading the National Experts Panel on Nanotechnology under the Government’s Science, Technology & Engineering for Development (STED) initiative. He is a Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, Royal Society of Chemistry, and the International Engineering and Technology Institute, and his honors include two Gold Medals from the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, the Charles Wallace Fellowship at Cambridge University, and the PIFI Distinguished Scientist Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
